Trade Unions Registrar Lauds Adeyanju's MWUN for Peaceful Activities
The outgoing President General, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Prince Adewale Adeyanju, had been lauded for excellently driving the union activities peacefully and for the timely filing of the union's annual financial account. The Registrar, Trade Unions in Nigeria, Mr. Olebe I. Alex, made the commendation in Lagos.
Speaking on Friday during his keynote address while declaring open the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of MWUN, the Registrar noted that he was impressed by the administrative ingenuity of Adeyanju in ensuring absolute peace in the conduct of the affairs of the union.
He pointed out that since he assumed office as Registrar, Trade Unions in Nigeria, only MWUN has not come with problems and leadership crises to his office unlike some other unions where their leaders would be fighting in his office even till 8pm and 9pm in the night. Olebe wished that Adeyanju would invite some of these crises ridden unions to attend MWUN programmes and learn how to promote peace in their unions.
He also commended the union under Adeyanju for the timely submission of audited annual financial account to his office, saying that "for the current year, MWUN happens to be the first to trade union that submitted her 2024 annual audited account to his office". The Registrar enjoined the new executive to be inaugurated that night to emulate this commendable effort, describing it as a mark of accountability and high sense of responsibility.
In his words: "It is a fact that for the current year, MWUN happens to be the first trade union that submitted her 2024 annual audited account. I advise the incoming executive to emulate this."
Unable to hide his love for the administrative prowess of Prince Adeyanju, the Registrar stated that the peaceful and orderly manner the outgoing President General was conducting the affairs of the union had made him to want to join the union if not that he does not belong to the maritime sector.
He said that the conference is one of the statutory meetings expected to be held and urged union leaders to as a matter of necessity hold their meetings as at when due to show that they are following their constitution. He noted that the inability of some union leaders to hold their meetings as at when due is the cause of internal crises.
Olebe maintained that the event was an occasion to take stock of the union's past activities as well as charting a new course for the future. He added that the meeting was also for the election of new leaders who would run the affairs of the union for the next four years. He called on the incoming executives to keep the flag flying and improve on the performance of Adeyanju who has proved to be an accomplished administrator.
He emphasized on the need to raise the bar by the incoming executives, saying that he would write to them if he sees that things are not taking proper shape.
The Registrar enjoined the incoming executives to always ensure that due process is followed in the day-to-day running of the activities of the union, charging that they should let the welfare of their members paramount to their hearts. He pointed out that leadership is a call to service and hinted that the stability of the union depends on adherence to the dictates of the constitution.
Emphasizing on statutory duty of unions to the office of the Registrar in the area of rendering of account as stipulated by Section 13 of 2004, Olebe stressed that it is statutory that as a registered union before 4th June of every year "every registered union shall send to the Registrar of Trade Unions an annual returns certified by duly appointed auditors."
He further enlightened that chapters of the union are expected to send their audited account to the national headquarters of the union which will make up the annual financial account to be submitted to the Registrar of the Trade Unions.
