Ogun State Enters Rice Production League, Harvests 200-Hectare Plantation
Ogun State has officially joined the ranks of rice-producing states in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in its economic transformation journey. Governor Dapo Abiodun flagged off the harvest of a 200-hectare rice plantation at Magboro Rice Farm in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, showcasing the state's commitment to agricultural development.
The Magboro Rice Farm, a brainchild of the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project, supported by the World Bank, aims to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve livelihoods. Governor Abiodun emphasized that this project aligns with President Bola Tinubu's administration's resolve to eradicate poverty and hunger by providing affordable food to Nigerians.
The 200-hectare farm, cultivated by 200 farmers, mainly women and youths from across the country, has yielded an impressive 1,400 metric tons of milled rice, translating to 20,000 bags per cycle, valued at N1 billion. With a three-month harvest cycle, the potential for three cycles per year promises a significant revenue boost.
Governor Abiodun announced plans to scale up the project to 2,000 hectares, targeting N30 billion in revenue, solidifying Ogun State's position as a food basket for the nation.
He highlighted the state's natural resources, manpower, and commitment to agriculture, emphasizing its importance in providing employment and raw materials for industries.
The OGSTEP Agricultural Sector Intervention offers critical support, including advanced techniques, quality seeds, modern irrigation, and technical training, with a 65% discount on mechanization operations.
Commissioner Bolu Owotomo, Economic Adviser Dapo Okubadejo, and Project Coordinator Mosun Owo-Odunsi commended the farmers and acknowledged the project's impact. Olu of Magboro, Oba Modiu Alalade, appreciated the project's significance, noting the town's potential for expanded farming.
Ogun State's entry into rice production marks a significant stride towards food sufficiency, economic growth, and job creation, solidifying its position as a leading agricultural hub in Nigeria.
