‎The Lagos State Waterways Authority has intensified safety inspections across major ferry terminals in Lagos as part of efforts to enforce strict compliance with waterways safety regulations and improve operational standards on the state’s inland waterways.
‎The enforcement exercise, which covered terminals and jetties including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex and Coconut, focused primarily on boat seaworthiness and compliance with life jacket safety requirements.
‎During the inspections, LASWA seized and removed 120 damaged life jackets from circulation, describing the move as part of immediate measures aimed at eliminating safety hazards and strengthening compliance across waterways operations.
‎The Authority noted that while several operators complied with established safety standards, some vessels still required repairs to attain full seaworthiness.
‎According to LASWA, the inspections reaffirmed that strict adherence to safety protocols, particularly regarding vessel conditions and the quality of life jackets provided for passengers, remains non-negotiable.
‎The Authority stated that enforcement operations would continue across all terminals to ensure total compliance with waterways safety regulations.
‎LASWA also reminded operators of their legal responsibility to maintain seaworthy vessels and provide only certified and functional life jackets for passengers using the waterways.
‎The agency reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer, more reliable and properly regulated waterways transportation system in Lagos State.
