Lagos Set to Launch Omi Eko Project to Revolutionize Water Transportation

The Lagos State Government is set to unveil a groundbreaking initiative that will redefine urban mobility and water transportation in Africa’s largest city. Through the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the government will officially launch the Omi Eko Project on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Five Cowries Terminal, Falomo.

The event, which begins at 10:00 a.m., will be graced by top government officials, development partners, community leaders, industry stakeholders, and members of the press. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to lead the ceremonial unveiling, supported by keynote presentations and a virtual demonstration of the project’s innovative features.

The Omi Eko Project represents a major leap in Lagos’s efforts to modernize its transport infrastructure and achieve sustainable, technology-driven mobility. The initiative aims to transform water transportation across the state through the deployment of over 78 high-capacity electric ferries, digital ticketing systems, intelligent terminals, and enhanced safety measures.

According to LASWA, the project will not only reduce travel time for commuters but also align with the Lagos Urban Mobility Plan, which promotes intermodal transport integration and environmental sustainability.

The Five Cowries Terminal, chosen as the venue for the launch, stands as a symbol of Lagos’s evolving transport ecosystem—serving as a key intermodal hub connecting land and water routes.

Officials say the Omi Eko Project underscores the state’s “unwavering commitment to sustainable development, smart city innovation, and inclusive growth,” positioning Lagos as a continental leader in clean and efficient urban transport.
