NIGERIAN SHIPPERS' COUNCIL INTRODUCES INTERNATIONAL CARGO TRACKING NOTE TO COMBAT SMUGGLING, BOOST SECURITYAND ENHANCE TRADE EFFICIENCY
The Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC) has taken a significant step towards combating smuggling, boosting security, and enhancing trade efficiency with the introduction of the International Cargo Tracking Note (ICTN).

This innovative system assigns a unique identification number to each shipment, ensuring the traceability of goods across international borders.

According to Dr. Pious Akutah, Executive Secretary of the NSC, the ICTN will play a crucial role in safeguarding Nigeria from drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and other contraband that fuel insecurity.

The system is designed to work in synergy with customs systems, enhancing compliance, risk assessment, and trade efficiency.

"The recent upsurge in arms and drug importation is a major concern for us, and we believe that the ICTN will be a game-changer in this regard," Dr. Akutah said. "We are calling on all stakeholders to support us in this initiative, as it is crucial for the benefit of the economy, Nigerians, and the growth of the Marine and Blue Economy."

The ICTN has several benefits, including faster clearance time, reduced congestion at ports, and lower demurrage costs for traders. It also ensures accurate cargo valuation, preventing revenue loss due to false declarations and blocking financial leakage caused by incorrect customs duties, levies, and tariffs.

Furthermore, the ICTN aligns with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and international maritime security standards. Many countries, including advanced economies, have successfully deployed similar systems, and Nigeria is poised to reap the benefits of this innovative technology.

"The ICTN is not meant to stifle trade, but to support the Federal Government's economic and security agenda," Dr. Akutah emphasized. "We believe that this system will enhance the ease of doing business in Nigeria, reduce the risk of smuggling and other illicit activities, and increase revenue generation for the government."

The NSC has commenced sensitization and awareness programs to educate stakeholders on the benefits and implementation of the ICTN. The council is working closely with customs agencies, shipping companies, and other stakeholders to ensure a seamless implementation process.

As Nigeria continues to navigate the complexities of international trade, the introduction of the ICTN is a significant step towards enhancing trade efficiency, security, and competitiveness. With the support of all stakeholders, the NSC is confident that the ICTN will be a game-changer for the Nigerian economy.
