Tinubu Empowers Ministers of State: Full Oversight Responsibilities Granted
In a significant move to restructure the federal executive council, President Bola Tinubu has granted full oversight responsibilities to Ministers of State.
This decision, aimed at enhancing governance efficiency, empowers Ministers of State to supervise agencies under their portfolio.
The beneficiaries of this new directive include Dr. Matawalle (Minister of State for Defence), Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, and Minister of State for Agriculture, among others.
By delegating full oversight powers, President Tinubu seeks to unlock the potential of Ministers of State, enabling them to make decisions and take action within their areas of responsibility.
Previously, files related to departments and agencies were sent to senior ministers by permanent secretaries, limiting the Ministers of State's authority. This often resulted in delays and inefficiencies in decision-making processes. However, with the new directive, Ministers of State can:
Key Aspects of the New Directive
- Full Oversight Responsibilities_: Ministers of State will oversee agencies under their portfolio.
Decision-Making Power_: Ministers of State can make decisions and direct action within their areas of responsibility.
Administrative Approvals_: Ministers of State can grant necessary administrative approvals
This development is expected to:
- Enhance governance efficiency
- Foster accountability and transparency
- Optimize the utilization of Ministers of State's expertise
- Streamline decision-making processes
According to sources, the idea was initially proposed by Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination. President Tinubu, recognizing the potential benefits, gave instant approval.
"The president was not pleased with the prevailing governing framework, where ministers of state were just ministers in name," a source in the office of the Head of Service of the Federation revealed.
"The president believes ministers of state should have the right to make decisions and direct action within their areas of responsibility."
With this directive, President Tinubu's administration aims to unleash the potential of all ministers, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to the country's development.
