NIWA STRENGTHENS SYSTEMS, PARTNERS ICPC TO BOOST TRANSPARENCY AND REVENUE
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has unveiled fresh strategies aimed at strengthening its operational systems and enhancing transparency through collaboration with anti-corruption agencies.
Speaking at a post-event press conference at the Authority’s headquarters in Lokoja, the Acting Managing Director, Umar Yusuf Girei, disclosed that NIWA recently convened a two-day Executive and Anti-Corruption Training themed “Strengthening Integrity and Revenue System in Inland Waterways Management." The programme was organised for board members, management staff, and area managers.
Girei also revealed that the Authority held its 2026 Management Retreat in Abuja as part of efforts to align institutional objectives and reposition the agency for improved performance.
He explained that the reforms are in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and are being implemented with the support of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
As part of its renewed anti-corruption drive, the NIWA management also engaged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to explore practical measures for deepening accountability and strengthening transparency across its operations.
The Acting Managing Director assured staff that the ongoing reforms under his leadership would translate into improved service delivery and better working conditions.
“NIWA remains committed to continuous improvement and stakeholder engagement. The reforms are expected to enhance both internal performance and public confidence,” Girei stated.
