Ogun State Government Approves Additional Day Off for Public Servants Amidst Fuel Price Hike
In a bid to alleviate the suffering of public servants amidst the fuel price hike, the Ogun State Government has approved an additional day off for officers on Grade Level 01-14, while officers on Grade Level 15-17 will maintain one day off duty per week. This decision was made by Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to further ease the burden on workers who face significant challenges commuting to work.
According to the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, the gesture is expected to translate to substantial relief while also enhancing service delivery through a more motivated and energized workforce.
He described Governor Abiodun as highly committed to the welfare of workers and urged all accounting officers to implement the policy immediately.
Governor Abiodun also stated that his administration is working towards implementing the new minimum wage, promising that Ogun State would not take second place in its implementation.
He emphasized the importance of workers in the state's rapid economic growth and pledged to continue partnering with organized labor to achieve economic prosperity.
The governor also initiated a meeting with stakeholders involved in the movement of people to find solutions to the current situation caused by the fuel subsidy removal. He explained the intricacies of the oil sector and acknowledged that the current realities are the fallout of the federal government's decision to reposition the nation's economy for sustainability.
To cushion the effects on the people, the state government has commenced an energy transition program by converting mass transit buses to CNG and launching electric motorcycles and tricycles.
The federal government is also providing support, including making rice available at subsidized prices and providing 500 CNG kits to convert commercial vehicles.
Governor Abiodun attributed the current fuel scarcity to operational and financial issues, while the hike in prices is due to subsidy removal and the floating of the Naira.
He expressed commitment to energy transition, citing its success in other countries, and disclosed that a Presidential CNG Initiative has been established.
The state government has also set up farmers' markets to enable people to buy foodstuffs at affordable prices and established a task force to monitor arbitrary hikes in transport fares.
Labor leaders appreciated the governor's efforts and made suggestions, including enforcing price regulation, providing special transportation arrangements, and allowing workers to work from home until the situation improves.
