Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria Condemns Abduction of NLC President Joe Ajaero
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under the leadership of Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, has strongly condemned the abduction of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, by security agents at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Ajaero was invited to attend a workers' congress organized by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Britain, where he was scheduled to address a global assembly of workers on behalf of Nigerian workers. However, he was arrested without a warrant and detained, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from the labor movement.
The MWUN has described the abduction as a "wholesome act of intimidation" and a violation of Ajaero's fundamental human rights. The union has called for his immediate and unconditional release, warning that it will comply with directives from the NLC if he is not freed.
The MWUN has also questioned the motives behind Ajaero's abduction, noting that he is not a fugitive and has not been accused of any crime. The union has accused the security agents of attempting to humiliate and dehumanize Ajaero, and has vowed to take action to protect his rights and interests.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among labor leaders and human rights activists, who have condemned the use of intimidation and harassment against trade unionists.
The MWUN has pledged to continue fighting for the rights of workers and trade unionists, and has called on the government to respect the rule of law and protect the rights of citizens.
