NIMASA Moves to Combat Piracy on Nigerian Waters
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is taking bold steps to tackle piracy on the nation's territorial waters. Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola announced plans to review the 2007 NIMASA Act during a media conference in Lagos.
The revised bill will empower NIMASA to regulate and monitor all vessels operating in Nigerian waters, focusing on smaller vessels often used for piracy. Dr. Mobereola emphasized the need for proper regulation to prevent water piracy.
He pledged to collaborate with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to ensure effective regulation of small boats. The 2007 NIMASA Act, also known as the Merchant Shipping Act, governs shipping, ship registration, and pollution prevention in Nigeria.
By reviewing and strengthening this act, NIMASA aims to enhance maritime security, protect lives and goods, and promote safe navigation in Nigerian waters.
