Maritime Workers Union Joins Nationwide Strike Against Police Harassment
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has pledged its unwavering support for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) directive to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.
This decisive move follows an emergency meeting of the NLC's National Executive Council (NEC) on August 20, 2024, in response to alleged persistent attacks on the labor movement by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, MWUN's Deputy Secretary General, Comrade Oniha Erazua, reaffirmed the union's commitment to the NLC's call to action.
The union has directed its members across all ports, jetties, terminals, and Oil and Gas Platforms to prepare for immediate mobilization.
The strike, scheduled to commence at midnight, is a unified protest against the NPF's investigation into the NLC leadership, which includes allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony. The NLC has vehemently condemned these charges as "clearly unfounded and politically motivated.
MWUN's leadership has emphasized the gravity and importance of this strike, urging all members to stand in solidarity with the NLC and the broader Nigerian working class.
Comrade Erazua stressed that the police investigation is a direct challenge to the labor movement and the rights of workers nationwide.
As the strike deadline approaches, MWUN has instructed its members to remain vigilant and fully prepared to participate in the industrial action.
This nationwide strike is expected to significantly impact the maritime sector and related industries, marking a critical moment for labor unions in Nigeria as they confront perceived harassment and defend their leadership and workers' rights.
