Mission to Seafarers Lagos Set to Establish Dedicated Jetty for Seafarers' Welfare
MTS Lagos Chairman, Chief Adebayo Sarumi, Announces Plans at Annual Sea Sunday Service and Award Giving Ceremony

In a significant development, the Mission to Seafarers (MTS) Lagos has announced plans to establish a designated jetty for seafarers, further enhancing its commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for those in the maritime industry.

This announcement was made by the Chairman of MTS Lagos, Chief Adebayo Sarumi, during the 2024 Annual Sea Sunday Service and Award Giving Ceremony held at All Souls' Anglican Church, Lekki, Lagos.

With a rich history dating back to 1914, MTS Lagos has been a beacon of hope for seafarers, providing essential support and services to those who visit the Lagos ports.

The organization's Center in Apapa has undergone significant renovations, elevating it to global best standards. Seafarers from around the world are encouraged to explore this modern facility during their visits to Lagos seaports.

Chief Sarumi acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by seafarers, including physical danger, suicide risks, long voyages without shore leaves, psychological trauma, piracy fears, illnesses, and more.

He expressed his delight at the increased patronage of the MTS Lagos facility since its enhancement and recognized the selfless contributions and partnerships with stakeholders.

The anticipated jetty will facilitate safer corridors and access to the MTS Lagos Centre, complementing the recent partnership with the Nigerian Navy FOC Command and other maritime agencies.

Stakeholders, including the Secretary General, MTS Worldwide, Mr. Andrew Wright, and the Chairman of Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN), Princess Vicky Haastrup, pledged their support for the welfare of seafarers and the MTS Lagos.

The event featured awards presented to industry leaders, including Princess Vicky Haastrup, Mrs. Funke Agbor (SAN), Jean Chiazor Anishere (SAN), Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko, and Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, in recognition of their contributions to the welfare of seafarers.

This development demonstrates MTS Lagos' unwavering commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for seafarers.

The establishment of the designated jetty and enhanced facilities at MTS Lagos sets a new standard for seafarer welfare in the region.
