NIWA, NSIB STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP TO REDUCE BOAT ACCIDENTS

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to improve safety and reduce boat accidents on the nation's inland waterways.
The Acting Managing Director of NIWA, Malam Umar Yusuf Girei, gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving the Director-General of NSIB, Captain Alex Sabundu Badeh Jnr, during a courtesy visit to the authority's headquarters in Lokoja, Kogi State.
Girei said the renewed partnership would focus on information sharing, joint operations and enhanced cooperation to address the persistent challenge of boat mishaps across the country's waterways.
He stressed that effective collaboration among relevant agencies remains crucial to ensuring safer navigation and safeguarding lives and property.
According to him, NIWA is committed to working closely with sister agencies to strengthen safety standards and enforce regulations aimed at improving water transportation in Nigeria.
He also assured the NSIB delegation of the authority's readiness to provide relevant information, technical expertise and operational support to facilitate timely investigations into marine accidents and develop preventive measures to minimise future occurrences.
Earlier, the Director-General of NSIB, Captain Alex Sabundu Badeh Jnr, said the visit was intended to deepen the existing relationship between both agencies and identify areas of collaboration in accident investigation, data sharing and the promotion of safety standards on Nigeria's inland waterways.
