Global shipping giant MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has become the first container shipping line in history to operate a fleet of 1,000 vessels, further strengthening its dominance in the global maritime industry.
According to shipping analyst Alphaliner, the Geneva-headquartered carrier crossed the milestone following the charter of the 868-TEU vessel Admiral Neptune.
The latest addition pushed MSC’s operated fleet capacity to 7.32 million TEUs, placing it significantly ahead of its closest competitor, A.P. Moller - Maersk, which currently operates 736 vessels.
“MSC’s fleet of 1,000 container ships comprises dedicated container vessels as well as what Alphaliner describes as ‘container friendly’ multipurpose ships,” the analyst stated.
Alphaliner also noted that the tally includes vessels operated through affiliated companies such as WEC Lines, Log-in Logistica and Medlog.
Industry observers say the development highlights MSC’s aggressive expansion strategy in recent years, driven by vessel acquisitions, long-term charters and investments across global logistics operations.
Data from AIS tracking platforms showed that the Admiral Neptune was docked at the Port of Antwerp and is expected to join MSC’s Antwerp–Grangemouth service.
MSC overtook Maersk as the world’s largest container shipping line in 2022 and has since widened the gap through sustained fleet growth and capacity expansion.
