LASWA, Interferry Launch Landmark Mentorship Programme to Raise Ferry Safety Standards in Lagos

Kathy Kyari
In a major step toward strengthening water transport safety and professionalism, the Lagos State Waterways Authority has partnered with Interferry to launch an 18-month Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme aimed at transforming industry standards in Lagos.

The initiative, described as a groundbreaking effort in Africa, is designed to revolutionize ferry safety practices, enhance operational efficiency, and elevate professional standards among operators within the state’s waterways sector.

Interferry, a global ferry association with consultative status at the International Maritime Organization, will provide top-tier mentorship, working alongside facilitators drawn from leading maritime institutions, companies, and regulatory agencies across Nigeria.

The programme will train a carefully selected cohort of 50 participants, including ferry captains, deckhands, marine engineers, technicians, safety officers, compliance professionals, and fleet managers.

Participants will undergo comprehensive modules covering ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and both preventive and predictive maintenance techniques.

According to LASWA, “an extensive intake verification was successfully completed on March 18, 2026, ensuring all applicants meet the highest standards of eligibility and selection criteria.”

The training will adopt a hybrid model, combining self-paced online learning, virtual mentoring, and monthly hands-on practical sessions.

The programme is scheduled to commence in May 2026.
The official kick-off is set for Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the LASWA Head Office in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The event will feature detailed programme insights, introduction of mentors and participants, as well as a strategic stakeholder engagement session.
