The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has congratulated acclaimed actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, on the outstanding box office success of her latest film, Behind The Scene (BTS), which has reportedly grossed over ₦2.4 billion at the Nigerian box office and continues to enjoy strong cinema exhibition nationwide.
The Board described the achievement as another major milestone in the growth of Nigerian cinema, noting that the record further cements Akindele’s status as one of Nollywood’s most influential and commercially successful figures.
In a statement issued by the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NFVCB, Dr Shaibu Husseini, the Board highlighted the significance of Akindele’s sustained box office dominance, observing that she has now delivered record-breaking cinema performances for four consecutive years.
According to the NFVCB, the consistency reflects not only creative excellence but also a strong understanding of audience engagement, as well as the evolving dynamics of film production, distribution and exhibition in Nigeria.
As part of its mandate to regulate film content, distribution and exhibition in the country, the Board reaffirmed its commitment to recognising and celebrating excellence that contributes meaningfully to the growth, visibility and commercial sustainability of Nigeria’s audiovisual industry.
In recognition of Akindele’s exceptional run, the NFVCB announced plans to formally honour her with a Box Office Queen Award for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025. The Board said arrangements are underway to present the award at a mutually convenient date.
Dr Husseini disclosed that although the award presentation was initially planned for the last PAO Digital Conference, it was deferred at the request of the filmmaker. He added that the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, alongside other top female executives, would be invited to participate in the ceremony, noting that the minister is enthusiastic about the development.
In a related development, the NFVCB also commended actress and filmmaker, Toyin Abraham, for the impressive box office performance of her directorial debut, Oversabi Auntie, which has grossed over ₦1 billion in cinemas across the country.
The Board described the feat as historic, noting that the film ranks among the four highest-grossing Nollywood films of all time and marks a successful entry for Abraham into film directing.
According to the statement, the success of Oversabi Auntie highlights Abraham’s versatility and growing creative influence, while reflecting the expanding opportunities for filmmakers redefining storytelling and audience connection in contemporary Nollywood.
“We congratulate both filmmakers on their respective milestones. Their achievements are strong indicators of the industry’s continued growth, resilience and global promise,” the Executive Director concluded.
