The Network of Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NNMJ) has extended its congratulations to the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, following his recent election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO).
In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by its Chairman, Dele Aderibigbe, and Secretary, Moses Ebosele, the group described Adeniyi’s election as a “historic moment for Nigeria and Customs administration across the world.”
Adeniyi made history on Saturday, June 28, 2025, in Brussels, becoming the first Nigerian to lead the 73-year-old WCO, an organization with 186 member countries and recognized as the highest decision-making body in global Customs administration. His emergence was hailed as a testament to the rapid transformation of the Nigeria Customs Service under his leadership.
Aderibigbe praised Adeniyi as an exceptional leader who consistently motivates others to realize their full potential.
Quoting former U.S. President John Quincy Adams, he said:
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
The NNMJ, regarded as the umbrella body for all maritime journalists in Nigeria, also urged stakeholders to continue supporting Adeniyi’s reform agenda.
The association noted that under his leadership, the Nigeria Customs Service has been repositioned and now rivals the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) as the second highest revenue generating agency in the country.
“On behalf of all Maritime Journalists in Nigeria, NNMJ congratulates CGC Adeniyi for bringing pride and honour to Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
