Two Construction Workers Killed, One Injured in Kwara Hotels Renovation Site Collapse

Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon at the Kwara Hotels renovation site in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, as two construction workers lost their lives and another was critically injured when a section of the hotel’s old fence collapsed.

The incident occurred during active construction work at the hotel, located in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), and is currently undergoing a major facelift under a N17.8 billion government-led infrastructure renewal initiative.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise resembling an explosion, triggering panic in the vicinity. A nearby trader, who requested anonymity, described the scene as “terrifying,” noting that many initially feared a bomb had gone off until emergency responders began arriving.

The three workers were rushed to a private hospital on Wahab Folawiyo Road (formerly Unity Road). Two of them were confirmed dead, while the third is currently receiving intensive care.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Kwara State, Rafiu Ajakaye, confirmed the incident, describing it as "saddening." He disclosed that the victims were immediately given first aid and emergency care, but two of them could not be saved. Families of the deceased have reportedly been contacted.

The identities of the victims have not yet been made public.

When visited by reporters on Wednesday, the Kwara Hotels premises had been cordoned off and placed under heavy security, with access denied to journalists and the public. Neither the construction company, Craneburg Construction, nor the project’s consulting engineers have issued an official statement regarding the cause of the structural collapse.

The hotel’s renovation, which began in October 2023, is scheduled to last 24 months. The incident has raised serious questions about safety compliance and construction oversight at the site.

As of press time, investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
