Lagos Police Ready to Secure June 12 Celebrations, Warns Against Unapproved Protest Venues
The Lagos State Police Command has announced that it is fully prepared to ensure security across the state during the June 12 Democracy Day celebrations, including a planned protest by civil society groups.
The Command issued the statement after Commissioner of Police, CP Owohunwa Jimoh, hosted fifteen Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at a crucial dialogue held Tuesday in Ikeja. The discussions focused on preventing breakdown of law and order and agreeing on modalities for safe protest and celebrations.
The CSOs reached a joint resolution with the police, affirming that all protests will be confined to the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, with an organized march starting from the Ikeja Under-Bridge. Any protest held outside this route will be considered a violation of the agreement.
Commissioner Jimoh cautioned protest organizers to guard against hijack by hoodlums and to avoid obstructing traffic or disturbing public peace. He also called for the message of peace to be shared with CSOs not present at the meeting to ensure unified compliance.
Reassuring Lagosians, the Command said it is committed to securing all celebratory and protest activities, urging residents to go about their daily activities without fear. Emergency contacts for the Lagos State Police Command remain active at 08063299264 and 08065154338.
