In a significant step towards enhancing public communication in Nigeria's public sector, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), FCT Chapter, have agreed to deepen their partnership to promote excellence, ethical standards, and strategic communication in public relations.
This renewed collaboration was the highlight of a courtesy visit by the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Assistant Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, to the NIPR FCT Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, May 16, 2025.
Maiwada, accompanied by a team from the Customs’ Public Relations Unit, emphasized the importance of building institutional bridges and sharing knowledge to elevate the standards of PR practice, not just within Customs but across the public service.
“We believe that excellence and professionalism should be the hallmark of our practice of Public Relations in the Nigeria Customs Service and beyond,” he said. He described the PR Unit under his leadership as one driven by youthful energy, unwavering dedication, and the full backing of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi.
Welcoming the delegation, NIPR FCT Chapter Chairman Stanley Ogadigo expressed appreciation for the Service’s evolving communication approach, lauding its current leadership for raising the bar.
“We're glad that the Comptroller-General of Customs has not disappointed us. He’s doing a great job and remains a shining example,” Ogadigo remarked.
He pledged the NIPR’s support for initiatives that aim to uplift the practice of public relations in the public sector. Ogadigo also hinted at joint projects focusing on capacity building, corporate social responsibility, and modernizing public communication in line with today’s fast-changing media landscape.
During the engaging discussions, both sides explored opportunities for training programmes and professional development, while also addressing how to make government communication more responsive, transparent, and citizen-focused.
The meeting concluded on a promising note, with both the NCS and the NIPR FCT Chapter reaffirming their shared vision of fostering continuous learning, ethical communication, and restoring public confidence in government institutions.
