The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, played host to the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Shamsudeen Ogunjimi at the Customs Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, in a calculated attempt to improve interagency cooperation and boost national revenue generation.
The visit is consistent with CGC Adeniyi's policy emphasis on institutional synergy and shared national responsibility, according to a statement released by AC Abdullahi Maiwada, the Customs National Public Relations Officer.
In his remarks, Adeniyi referred to the conference as "a timely, symbolic, and remarkable move" to foster tighter fiscal collaboration and emphasised the critical role the AGF's office plays in monitoring public finances.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges, particularly in revenue generation, the CGC reassured his guests of the Service’s readiness to contribute more meaningfully to the nation's financial stability.
“We have seen how critical revenue generation is in this country, and we are doing our best from our part. Looking at how the Service was able to increase its revenue by over 70% before the end of 2024, it is a demonstration of our resolve to support government’s financial stability,” he stated.
CGC Adeniyi also congratulated Ogunjimi on his appointment and commended his early efforts at building partnerships across institutions.
A major highlight of the meeting was the AGF’s proposal to create a joint training framework for staff of both agencies, a move Adeniyi welcomed with enthusiasm, pledging Customs’ full support for its implementation.
Ogunjimi, while appreciating the warm reception, expressed his admiration for the Customs leadership’s strategic direction. “This collaboration has just started, and I want to assure you that it is going to be robust. I also wish to request that we bring on board, some of your officers to our office to be engaged in trainings that will strengthen inter-agency understanding and cooperation,” he said.
He further emphasized his office’s commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and capacity building across Nigeria’s public financial system through enhanced institutional linkages.
