Bayelsa State Government Empowers Soilless Farmers to Boost Food Production and Security
The Bayelsa State government has taken a significant step towards enhancing food production and security in the state by empowering 180 trainees of its Soilless Farming Scheme. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to promote agriculture and reduce dependence on imported food products.
Governor Douye Diri, while receiving the trainees at the Executive Council Chambers in Government House, Yenagoa, emphasized the importance of food security and encouraged the trainees to make good use of their training to become self-employed and train others. He noted that the government placed high premium on food security and was working towards producing food not only for Bayelsans but beyond the state.
The farmers were trained in Ogun State through a collaboration between the Bayelsa government and MasterCard. The training program was designed to equip the trainees with the skills and knowledge required to practice soilless farming, a technique that involves growing plants in a controlled environment without the use of soil.
Governor Diri applauded MasterCard and the Commissioner for Youth Development for facilitating the program. He stated that a committee comprising the Commissioners for Agriculture, Finance, and Youth Development had been set up to ensure the trainees practiced what they learned. The committee will provide the necessary support and guidance to the trainees to enable them to establish their own soilless farms.
One of the beneficiaries, Tari Adamawa, expressed her gratitude to the government for the opportunity. She stated that they were trained in farming techniques that require the use of any available space, and they were ready to put their knowledge into practice to enhance food security in the state.
The Commissioner for Youth Development, Alfred Kemepado, thanked the governor for approving the training of the youths. He expressed optimism that the application of the training would enhance the quest for food security in the state.
This initiative is a significant step towards achieving food security in Bayelsa State. The government's efforts to promote agriculture and support farmers are commendable, and it is expected that this program will have a positive impact on the state's food production and security.
The empowerment of the soilless farmers is also expected to create employment opportunities and increase the state's revenue. The government's commitment to supporting agriculture and farmers is a step in the right direction, and it is hoped that this initiative will be sustained and expanded to benefit more farmers in the state.
