Ogun State, Morocco Seal Historic Partnership for Economic Growth


In a move aimed at boosting its economy and improving the lives of its citizens, the Ogun State government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Confederation of General Employers of Morocco (CGEM). This historic partnership seeks to foster collaboration in various sectors, including education, energy, infrastructure, and port development.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, who signed the MoU on behalf of Ogun State, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting Morocco's impressive achievements in education, technology, manufacturing, agriculture, and other areas. He noted that Morocco offers a 30% subsidy to investors and has signed 60 trade agreements worldwide, making it an attractive partner for Ogun State.

The partnership is expected to yield numerous benefits, including:

Improved energy generation and distribution Ogun State hopes to learn from Morocco's expertise in hydro, solar, and gas energy to reduce the cost of energy. The state has a scheme called the "Light Up Ogun Project," which requires about 6,000 to 7,000 megawatts to power the numerous industries operating in the state.

 Morocco's advanced agricultural technology and fertilizer production capabilities are expected to boost Ogun State's agricultural sector. Morocco is the largest producer of fertilizer on the continent and one of the biggest exporters of fertilizer.

 The partnership aims to promote manufacturing and industrial growth in Ogun State, with a focus on the automobile and agro-food industries. The state has a Special Economic Zone at the Gateway International Airport, which would serve as a Free Trade Zone.


The state plans to extend the Blue Line from Lagos to Ogun State and develop the Olokola port area into the deepest seaport in Nigeria. The port is expected to become a major hub for trade and commerce in the region.


 The partnership seeks to strengthen technical colleges in Ogun State to train Nigerian graduates and drive economic growth. The state is ready to partner with the Moroccans in the area of technical and vocational education to bring about an economic revolution.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Ali Zerouali, Vice President of CGEM, stated that his organization is ready to partner with Ogun State in the automobile, agro-food industries, and the education sector. He believes that this partnership will help strengthen the cordial relationship and friendship between the two countries, as well as enhance economic ties.

The signing of the MoU marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation between Ogun State and Morocco. With its rich natural resources, strategic location, and skilled workforce, Ogun State is poised to become a major economic hub in Nigeria. The partnership with Morocco is expected to play a significant role in achieving this goal.
