The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to strengthen border security and facilitate legitimate trade. Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR recently met with National Security Adviser (NSA) Malam Nuhu Ribadu to discuss the deployment of advanced technology to enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement across Nigeria's land and maritime borders.

The meeting, which took place on Thursday, March 6, 2025, highlighted the NCS's efforts to integrate Geospatial technology into its border management operations. CGC Adeniyi emphasized the crucial role of technology in modern border management, noting that the Service has made significant progress in deploying innovative solutions to combat smuggling, trafficking, and other transborder crimes.

"Technology remains the key to effective border management in today's rapidly evolving security landscape," CGC Adeniyi stated. "The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to deploying Geospatial technology and other innovative tools to enhance our surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement capabilities. These efforts are designed to align with international best practices while addressing Nigeria's unique border security challenges.

The CGC further explained that the technology-driven initiatives would not only strengthen the nation's ability to curb illicit trade but also facilitate seamless, legitimate cross-border transactions. He noted that the NCS is working closely with other government agencies and international organizations to ensure that its border management operations are aligned with global standards.

In response, the National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its proactive approach to border security and trade facilitation. He affirmed that technology is indispensable in safeguarding Nigeria's territorial integrity and emphasized the need for inter-agency collaboration in tackling security threats and ensuring national stability.

"The Customs Service has demonstrated a commendable commitment to modernisation and efficiency in securing our borders," the NSA remarked. "Integrating advanced technology into border management is a step in the right direction and aligns perfectly with our broader national security objectives. We are confident that these innovations will enhance border control operations while ensuring that legitimate trade is not hindered."

The meeting between the CGC and the NSA underscored the importance of collaboration and coordination among government agencies in addressing security challenges. The NSA assured the CGC of continued support for the Nigeria Customs Service's modernisation agenda, emphasizing the need for synergy in intelligence sharing and operational coordination.

As the Nigeria Customs Service continues to leverage technology to strengthen border security, it is clear that the Service is committed to ensuring that Nigeria's borders are secure, efficient, and conducive to legitimate trade. With the support of the National Security Adviser and other government agencies, the NCS is poised to achieve its goals and contribute to the country's economic growth and development.
