NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE AND NATIONAL SPORTS COMMISSION TEAM UP TO HOST AFRICAN VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, PROMOTE NATIONAL PRIDE AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
In a bid to promote national pride, foster unity, and provide opportunities for youth development, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has partnered with the National Sports Commission to host the African Volleyball Inter-Club Women's Championship in Abuja, Nigeria.
This exciting development is expected to boost Nigeria's global sports profile and demonstrate the country's capabilities in hosting international sporting events.
The partnership was formalized during a courtesy visit by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, on Monday, January 27, 2025. During the meeting, CGC Adeniyi emphasized the NCS's commitment to using sports as a tool to promote national pride, foster unity, and provide opportunities for youth development.
"We believe that sports have the power to unite Nigerians and promote our national pride," CGC Adeniyi said. "As an organization, we are committed to supporting initiatives that promote youth development and national unity. Hosting the African Volleyball Inter-Club Women's Championship is a significant step in this direction."
The championship, scheduled to take place from April 1 to 14, 2025, will attract top volleyball teams from across Africa. The NCS has been granted hosting rights by the Nigerian Olympic Committee and will collaborate with the Nigerian Volleyball Federation to deliver a memorable tournament.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Malam Shehu Dikko, praised the initiative, describing it as a significant milestone in promoting Nigeria's image and fostering youth participation in sports. "This championship is not just an opportunity to showcase our athletes but also a platform to inspire young Nigerians and demonstrate our organizational capabilities to the world," Dikko said.
The Commission has pledged its full support, including access to facilities, technical expertise, and logistical assistance, to ensure the championship sets a benchmark for future sporting events in the country.
The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr Habu Gumel, also commended the initiative, affirming his commitment to making the tournament successful. "We must be deliberate in our preparations and ensure that this championship becomes a springboard for hosting more international tournaments," he stated.
The partnership between the NCS and the National Sports Commission is a significant step in promoting sports development in Nigeria. With this collaboration, Nigeria is poised to host a successful international sporting event, promoting its growing stature in sports and demonstrating its capabilities in hosting world-class events.
