Nigeria Customs Service, Area 2 Command, Onne Achieves Remarkable Success in 2024, Seizes ₦20.3 Billion Worth of Illicit Medicines and Generates ₦634 Billion in Revenue
The Nigeria Customs Service, Area 2 Command, Onne, has announced significant achievements in its end-of-year activities, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health, ensuring national security, and complying with Nigeria's import regulations.
According to Comptroller Mohammed Babandede, the Command has seized an additional 12 containers of illicit medicine, including cough syrup codeine, Really Extra Diclofenac, and Royal Apple Tramadol, with a duty-paid value of ₦20,309,890,800.
The breakdown of the seized items includes:
- _1,721,100 bottles of 100ml Cough Syrup Codeine_
- _510,000 tablets of 50mg Really Extra Diclofenac_
- _7,100,000 tablets of 225mg Royal Apple Tramadol and Tramaking_
- _3,461 pieces of sanitary ware fittings used for concealment
840 pieces of chilly cutters used for concealment
_153 cartons of TVS rubber_
These seizures demonstrate the Command's commitment to combating smuggling and illicit trade, and its efforts to protect the health and well-being of Nigerians. The Command has also appreciated the support and collaboration of stakeholders, including the media, in amplifying its message and efforts to combat smuggling.
In terms of revenue generation, the Command has surpassed its target of ₦618 billion, generating a total revenue of ₦634 billion, which represents a 103% achievement of the annual target. This amount is a significant increase of 98% over the 2023 generated revenue.
The Command has also made notable achievements in export, processing a total of 2,707,339.22 metric tonnes of goods with a free-on-board value of $952,986,490.99. The major commodities exported through this axis include sesame seeds, aluminum ingot, granular urea in bulk, wheat bran, and orange peel, among others.
In recognition of the Command's efforts, the Comptroller-General of Customs has awarded Area 2 Command as the best Command in anti-smuggling operations. This honor has bolstered the morale and dedication of the officers, who have been promoted in the recently released 2024 promotion for General Duty/Support Staff.
A total of 14 Deputy Comptrollers were elevated to the rank of Comptroller, 6 Assistant Comptrollers were elevated to the rank of Deputy Comptrollers, and 17 Chief Superintendents of Customs were elevated to the rank of Assistant Comptrollers. Other newly promoted officers include 22 to Chief Superintendent of Customs, 4 to Superintendent of Customs, 18 to Deputy Superintendent of Customs, 14 to Assistant Superintendent of One, and 16 to Assistant Superintendent of Two. Junior Officers were also promoted, with 9 getting Inspector of Customs, 3 getting Customs Assistant One, and 3 getting Customs Assistant Two.
Comptroller Babandede expressed his appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his support and recognition of the Command's efforts. He also commended the officers and men of the Command for their hard work and dedication to duty.
