Nigeria Urged to Integrate Maritime Studies into School Curriculum
Federal Commissioner for the National Population Commission in Lagos, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, has made a compelling case for the inclusion of Marine and Blue Economy subjects in primary and secondary school education. Speaking at the 5th National Virtual Marine and Blue Economy Quiz Competition Awards in Lagos, Oladunjoye emphasized the importance of introducing maritime education at critical stages of learning.
Oladunjoye highlighted the potential benefits of maritime education, citing Nigeria's strategic position to become a cargo hub for West and Central Africa. She also noted that Ocean Ambassador is working to expose girls to ocean-related programs, encouraging them to consider careers in the maritime sector.
Oladunjoye urged parents to encourage children to explore maritime opportunities and called on relevant ministries to collaborate on a proposal for the Federal Ministry of Education. This would enable the inclusion of Marine and Blue Economy subjects in the national curriculum, making it an examinable subject for states and other West and Central African nations.
Mrs. Adeola Arofin, Chairman of the Association of International School Educators of Nigeria (AISEN), noted that Nigeria's blue economy has vast opportunities, including fisheries, medical research, ICT, pharmaceuticals, transport, and eco-tourism, worth N296 billion dollars . Mrs. Regina Fabamwo, Chairman of the Lagos State Civil Service Commission, also highlighted the growing interest in maritime studies, with many graduates seeking employment with the Lagos State Government.
The Convener of Ocean Ambassador, Mrs. Violet Williams, encouraged students, particularly girls, to pursue maritime education and tap into the industry's opportunities. Williams suggested maritime tourism to provide hands-on experience in areas like shipbuilding, fisheries, aquaculture, and other maritime fields.
The event saw 20 schools participate, with the top five students receiving gifts and awards. Uhie Pentecost from Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary took the first position, followed by Adekumfola Olowodola and Olumide Makanju from Bowen College. APM Terminals awarded scholarships of N250,000 each to the top three runners-up.
