LAGESC Clears Out Elegbeta Waterfront: 54 Shanties, 84 Occupants Removed
The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, has taken bold action to clean up the Elegbeta waterfront, removing 54 illegal shanties and dislodging 84 occupants beneath Eko Bridge in the Ebute-Ero area .
This operation, led by Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), aimed to reduce environmental nuisances and promote a cleaner, greener Lagos.
The Elegbeta Water Channel had become a haven for miscreants and illegal occupants, who engaged in indiscriminate dumping of refuse, open defecation, and urination .
The area was also used as a criminal hideout. After serving a seven-day abatement notice, which was ignored, LAGESC stepped in to restore order.
The agency's primary goal is to maintain a clean environment, as outlined in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's THEMES+ agenda ¹. Corps Marshal Cole praised Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab's leadership in this effort.
Cole issued a strong warning to those who dump refuse in drains and water bodies or erect illegal structures on road setbacks ¹. He emphasized that the law will catch up with offenders, and they will face decisive action.
The KAI boss urged Lagos residents to use pedestrian bridges instead of crossing highways and encouraged citizens to be more safety-conscious, especially during the upcoming yuletide season .
He also called for community-based intelligence to support law enforcement.
This operation demonstrates LAGESC's commitment to creating a better environment for Lagosians.
