Maritime Workers Union Disavows October 1 Nationwide Protest
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued a statement distancing itself from a planned nationwide protest scheduled for October 1, 2024.
The union expresses concern and apprehension regarding the impending protest, emphasizing that it is not associated with the individuals planning the event.
As a union comprising essential service providers and critical economic actors, MWUN members are committed to delivering uninterrupted services, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 lockdown .
The union recognizes the right to peaceful assembly and expression but will not participate in industrial actions not directed by its recognized organs, such as the Central Working Committee (CWC).
MWUN advises its members not to embark on any mass action in ports, terminals, jetties, and oil and gas platforms to prevent disruption of marine operations, which is crucial to the economy.
Instead, members are urged to maintain industrial peace and harmony and be vigilant against potential miscreants.
Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adeyanju Adewale, President General of MWUN, emphasize send the union's commitment to patriotism and essential services during the COVID-19 lockdown .
He warned members to avoid participating in protests not sanctioned by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The statement concludes with a call to action, encouraging MWUN members to remain calm and focused on their duties, ensuring the continuity of marine operations.
