Inland Waterways Jurisdiction: Jamoh Describes Supreme Court Judgement as a Win-win Decision

Inland Waterways Jurisdiction: Jamoh Describes Supreme Court Judgement as a Win-win Decision

Kathy Kyari

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Director General, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, has referred to the Supreme Court's decision, which upheld the Federal Government's authority to regulate activities in Nigerian inland waterways through the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), as a win-win decision.

Reacting via his official X handle, @JamohBashir, he said that this should resolve questions of ambiguity and multiple taxation because states will no longer impose taxes on investors, which is the federal government's responsibility. This will make it easier for companies in the maritime industry to conduct business. In the end, he continued, it will draw in additional capital from both domestic and foreign sources.

While acknowledging that the Supreme Court's decision will greatly aid the Federal Government in its efforts to fully utilize the nation's over 10,000 kilometers of inland waters, Jamoh urged all relevant parties—especially the State Governments—to accept the ruling and work with NIWA and NIMASA. He claimed that by doing this, Nigeria's marine potential will be better utilized for the good of all Nigerians.
