COMTUA Frowns at "Kill Themselves" Comment by Police

COMTUA Frowns at "Kill Themselves" Comment by Police

The National President,  Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations (COMTUA), Comrade Adeyinka Aroyewun, has frowned at a very disturbing statement recently made by CSP Shittu of the Area "B" Command, Apapa, Lagos.
Aroyewun noted that the police officer's comments, at a meeting in area "B" conference room on the 8th November 2023, are both alarming and highly condemnable.
The COMTUA National President stated this in a protest letter written to the Commander, Area B Police Command, Apapa, Lagos which was copied to Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu, Governor of Lagos State and Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command.
Aroyewun quoted CSP Shittu as saying that factions of a union should engage in a "superiority context" and "kill themselves" before he can take action as a police officer.
Furthermore, CSP Shittu was accused of actually conferring authority on a particular faction to occupy the road and determine which vehicles are allowed access.
He stated that such remarks, are not only irresponsible but also raise serious questions about the impartiality and professionalism expected from law enforcement officers.

"It is deeply troubling that a police officer, whose primary duty is to maintain law and order, would suggest resorting to violence as a means of resolving disputes. "This statement not only undermines the principles of peaceful resolution and the rule of law but also sets a dangerous precedent that can potentially lead to further tensions and lawlessness," he  said.

"A  similar stament was made by your humble self in your office, after which you insisted that you will not entertain any further comment till you receive a petition. I wanted to advice you on the likely crisis that may erupt if not attended; you declined any further contributions.

"The implications of this statement are significant, particularly for public safety and the proper functioning of transportation and trade activities. Granting authority to a faction to control access to a public road not only creates an environment of uncertainty and injustice but also poses a threat to the rights and safety of all individuals involved.

"In light of these concerns, I urge you to thoroughly investigate this matter and take appropriate action. It is crucial that the public's trust in law enforcement agencies is upheld, and any behavior contrary to the principles of fairness, impartiality, and professionalism is addressed promptly.

"I also call upon you sir, to provide clarification on the matter and reaffirm your commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and safety of all citizens. Public statements and actions by law enforcement officers should be in line with the principles of justice, peace, and respect for the fundamental rights of individuals.

" It is essential that we foster an environment where public officials are held accountable for their words and actions, and where the principles of justice and fairness prevail.

"Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I trust that you will approach it with the seriousness it deserves," Aroyewun stated in the letters.
