Mundi Takes Over MMAC as Otunla Reports ₦175.68bn Revenue
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Murtala Muhammed Area Command (MMAC), has recorded a leadership change following the assumption of duty by Deputy Comptroller MD Mundi as Acting Customs Area Controller.
Mundi succeeds Acting Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs GA Otunla, who has been elevated to the rank of Acting ACG and redeployed to Human Resources Development.
The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Command’s Conference Room, where the outgoing controller highlighted the Command’s achievements and urged personnel to sustain the progress made under his leadership.
Presenting an account of his tenure, Otunla disclosed that the Command generated ₦175.68 billion in revenue between January and October 2026, underscoring its contribution to government revenue and its commitment to efficient Customs operations.
He also reported that the Command collected ₦6.2 billion in a single day on October 8, 2026, exceeding its daily revenue target of ₦1.16 billion by approximately 433 per cent.
According to him, the impressive performance was driven by strategies designed to prevent revenue leakages, alongside the use of cargo scanning technology, comprehensive cargo examinations and intelligence-led risk management.
On enforcement, Otunla revealed that officers intercepted approximately 178 packages of Tramadol and 50 cartons of Canadian Loud, with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦118.23 million.
The seized substances were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action, reflecting the Command’s collaboration with relevant agencies in combating illicit drug trafficking and safeguarding public health.
The outgoing controller attributed the achievements to the commitment of Customs officers and men, the support of sister security agencies and the cooperation of stakeholders operating within the Command.
He also expressed gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for the confidence and support extended to him during his tenure.
Congratulating Mundi on his appointment, Otunla called on officers and men to demonstrate the same discipline, loyalty and cooperation under the new leadership to ensure uninterrupted operations and continued progress.
In his remarks, Mundi thanked the Comptroller-General and the NCS management for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the strategic Command.
He pledged to consolidate the achievements of his predecessor, identifying revenue generation, the prevention of revenue leakages, compliance with Customs laws and regulations, and intensified anti-smuggling activities as key priorities of his administration.
Mundi also underscored the need to improve cargo clearance procedures and facilitate legitimate trade, assuring stakeholders that efforts would be made to reduce unnecessary delays without weakening enforcement measures.
He stressed that effective engagement with importers, exporters, licensed Customs agents, airlines, cargo terminal operators and other stakeholders would be crucial to achieving the Command’s operational objectives.
The new Acting Customs Area Controller further charged personnel to maintain high standards of discipline, integrity, professionalism and accountability, noting that teamwork and adherence to the chain of command would remain fundamental to his leadership approach.
He assured stakeholders of a fair, firm and transparent administration focused on measurable results, while pledging to preserve a peaceful and productive working environment.
The transition signals a new chapter for the MMAC, with Mundi expected to build on the Command’s revenue performance, strengthen enforcement against smuggling and improve trade facilitation through greater operational efficiency and stakeholder collaboration.
