LASWA Honours Veteran Mariners After 35 Years of Service to Lagos Waterways

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has honoured two veteran marine professionals, Prince Gbadamosi Hakeem and Captain Shakirudeen Lamidi, as they retire from the Lagos State Civil Service after 35 years of meritorious service.
The Authority described the retirees as distinguished professionals whose decades of experience contributed significantly to the development of water transportation, marine operations and safety on Lagos waterways.
Prince Hakeem, a former Marine Operations Supervisor, was particularly recognised for his contribution to the management and operational readiness of LASWA's fleet of boats.
Widely regarded as one of the finest Marine Operations Supervisors produced by LASWA, he was responsible for overseeing daily fleet operations, as well as supervising boat captains and deckhands operating across the state's waterways.
His colleagues affectionately referred to him as "Number 1", a recognition of his standing and experience within the marine operations team.
LASWA said his commitment to professionalism, operational efficiency and safety compliance also enabled him to mentor and nurture a new generation of boat captains and marine personnel who continue to serve the industry.
Prince Hakeem began his public service career with the defunct Lagos State Ferry Corporation before joining LASWA, bringing with him decades of practical experience and institutional knowledge that the Authority described as invaluable to its operations and the wider maritime sector.
Also retiring is Captain Lamidi, a seasoned mariner and senior boat captain whose career spans decades of service on the Lagos waterways.
Like Prince Hakeem, Captain Lamidi started his career with the Lagos State Ferry Corporation before joining LASWA in 2008.
Throughout his career, he distinguished himself through his navigational expertise, professionalism and commitment to waterways safety.
According to LASWA, Captain Lamidi's calm leadership and extensive knowledge of the Lagos waterways earned him the respect of colleagues, passengers and other stakeholders.
Beyond his operational responsibilities, the Authority said he played an important role in mentoring younger captains and transferring critical maritime knowledge and experience to the next generation of marine personnel.
LASWA said the retirement of the two professionals marked the conclusion of remarkable careers that coincided with, and contributed to, the evolution of water transportation in Lagos State.
The Authority described their 35 years of service as a legacy of dedication, discipline and selflessness, noting that their contributions helped shape LASWA's operations and the broader development of water transportation in the state.
LASWA expressed appreciation to Prince Hakeem and Captain Lamidi for their years of service, while wishing both retirees good health, happiness and fulfilment as they begin a new chapter of their lives.
