‎Maritime Writes Project Opens Applications for Sixth Edition, Targets 50 Emerging Storytellers
‎Kathy Kyari
‎The organisers of the Maritime Writes Project have announced the commencement of applications for the sixth edition of the annual creative writing bootcamp, with only 50 participants to be selected for the free programme scheduled to hold in Lagos from August 12 to 15, 2026.
‎The initiative, which has grown into a unique platform combining creative writing with maritime education, is designed to equip aspiring writers, journalists, educators, students, professionals and storytellers with practical skills while deepening their understanding of Africa's Blue Economy.
‎According to the organisers, the Maritime Writes Project has evolved beyond a conventional writing workshop into a hub where creativity, maritime literacy and experiential learning converge to inspire authentic African stories from the maritime sector.
‎Participants will undergo intensive masterclasses facilitated by professors, distinguished academics, published authors, veteran journalists, publishers, illustrators, maritime professionals and captains of industry.
The sessions will cover key areas including ports, shipping, inland waterways, maritime trade, ocean governance, coastal communities, maritime culture, communication, diplomacy and the Blue Economy.
‎The programme will also provide participants with guided educational visits to seaports, terminals, ships, naval facilities and coastal communities, offering firsthand exposure to Nigeria's maritime industry. The organisers noted that approvals for some of the planned visits have already been secured.
‎In addition to strengthening participants' creative writing, storytelling, research, communication and critical thinking skills, the bootcamp aims to connect attendees with industry leaders and expose them to career opportunities within the Blue Economy.
‎Participation in the programme is free but subject to a competitive selection process. Successful participants will receive official certificates of participation, while the 10 best stories produced during the bootcamp will be professionally edited and published in the Maritime Writes Anthology.
‎Interested applicants have been encouraged to apply through the project's online registration platform before the selection process closes.
