‎Tinubu Extends Adeniyi’s Tenure as Customs CG to February 2027
‎Kathy Kyari
‎The Federal Government has extended the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, by an additional six months, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
‎The extension was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and announced on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The new tenure will take effect after the expiration of Adeniyi’s current term on August 1, 2026.
‎The decision is expected to provide the Customs chief with sufficient time to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing trade facilitation, border management, and revenue generation.
‎A major focus during the extension period will be the implementation of the National Single Window project, a flagship government initiative designed to streamline trade procedures, reduce bottlenecks at ports, improve operational efficiency, and increase government revenue.
‎According to the Presidency, the additional six months will also support a smooth leadership transition within the Customs Service while strengthening institutional stability.
Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board on critical personnel matters that will shape the agency’s future.
‎Among the key responsibilities during the transition period are the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the retirement of personnel who have either reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years of service, in accordance with public service regulations.
‎The extension reflects the Federal Government’s confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership and the transformation agenda he has pursued since assuming office in June 2023.
‎Since taking over as Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi has overseen a series of reforms aimed at modernising Customs operations, improving compliance, facilitating legitimate trade, and strengthening revenue collection.
‎Adeniyi, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, joined the Customs Service in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks.
He became a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, was promoted to Comptroller in 2017, advanced to Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and was elevated to Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
‎His appointment as Comptroller-General by Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2023 marked the beginning of a reform-driven administration within the Service.
‎With the latest extension, Adeniyi is expected to conclude several ongoing institutional reforms and lay the groundwork for an orderly transfer of leadership when his tenure finally expires in February 2027.
