The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) have commenced discussions on a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing safety standards, improving accident investigation processes, and boosting operational efficiency across Lagos waterways.
The move followed a courtesy visit by an NSIB delegation led by its Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh, to the LASWA headquarters in Lagos, where both agencies explored areas of collaboration to strengthen safety oversight and accident prevention within the state's growing inland waterways transport sector.
Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager of LASWA and Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, underscored the importance of inter-agency cooperation in advancing the state's vision for safe, efficient, and sustainable water transportation.
According to Emmanuel, waterways transportation has become an increasingly vital component of Lagos' transport network, making it necessary for stakeholders to work together to improve safety standards, operational performance, and public confidence in water travel.
He noted that collaboration between LASWA and NSIB would support ongoing efforts to ensure that safety remains a top priority as the state continues to expand its blue economy and water transport infrastructure.
In his remarks, NSIB Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh, highlighted the Bureau's mandate of promoting transportation safety through independent investigations and evidence-based safety recommendations.
Badeh said closer collaboration with LASWA would help identify safety risks, strengthen accident prevention measures, and foster a stronger safety culture among operators and waterways users.
Discussions during the visit focused on key areas of partnership, including safety data sharing, joint public awareness campaigns, capacity-building programmes, incident reporting systems, emergency response coordination, and technical support for accident investigations and safety management systems.
Both agencies expressed commitment to establishing a robust working relationship that would contribute to safer waterways operations and support the continued growth of water transportation in Lagos State.
The meeting ended with an agreement to sustain engagement and develop practical initiatives aimed at improving safety outcomes for passengers, operators, and other users of Lagos waterways.
