ADC Demands Immediate Government Response Following Devastating Oshodi Flood Disaster
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed deep concern over the devastating flood that swept through several parts of Oshodi on Sunday, June 28, 2026, leaving behind a trail of destruction and hardship for residents, traders, commuters, and business owners.
The flood, which followed heavy rainfall, submerged major roads, homes, shops, and business premises, disrupting commercial activities and causing significant losses to countless families. Many residents were forced to abandon their properties as floodwaters rapidly overtook their communities, highlighting the urgent need for lasting solutions to Lagos' recurring flooding challenges.
In a statement issued on June 29, 2026, the ADC described the incident as a painful reminder of the consequences of poor drainage infrastructure, blocked waterways, and inadequate flood prevention measures.
The party stressed that such disasters are preventable and should not continue to threaten the lives and livelihoods of hardworking Nigerians.
The ADC extended its heartfelt sympathy to everyone affected by the disaster, particularly families who lost valuable property, traders whose businesses suffered severe damage, and residents whose daily lives have been disrupted. The party emphasized that no citizen should have to endure avoidable hardship due to failures in environmental planning and infrastructure maintenance.
The party called on the Lagos State Government, the Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to take immediate and coordinated action. According to the ADC, priority should be given to providing emergency relief materials and financial assistance to affected victims, accelerating desilting and maintenance of drainage systems ahead of the peak rainy season, and strictly enforcing environmental sanitation laws to discourage the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters and drainage channels.
The ADC further noted that Oshodi remains one of the busiest commercial and transportation hubs in Nigeria, serving as the gateway to Lagos. As such, the area deserves modern infrastructure, effective urban planning, and proactive environmental management capable of preventing future flooding and protecting lives and property.
The party concluded by urging the relevant authorities to act without delay, emphasizing that residents deserve more than promises—they deserve practical and lasting solutions. It warned that failure to address the underlying causes of flooding would continue to expose thousands of residents and businesses to unnecessary risks whenever heavy rains occur.
The ADC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies that promote safer communities, improved infrastructure, and responsible governance, while calling on all stakeholders to work together in preventing future disasters.
