NIWA Backs West Coast Cargo Jetty, Plans Smart Inland Trade Link to Ghana
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is set to facilitate a West Coast cargo jetty to boost seamless movement of goods across the sub-region.
As part of the plan, NIWA may operationalise some existing jetties to kick-start cargo traffic between Nigeria and Ghana in a pilot phase.
The disclosure came during a joint inspection of Marina Jetty, Lagos, on Thursday by officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), NIWA, and a Ghanaian trade delegation of corporate and private sector reps.
NIWA’s Acting Managing Director, Mr. Yusuf Girei, said the Authority is ready to support the jetty project, citing extensive waterfront infrastructure that can drive tech-enabled, hassle-free cargo operations with direct access to Lagos markets.
Girei, who led the NIWA team with GM (Marine) Engr. Horsefall Dakio and Lagos Area Manager Engr. Sarat Braimah, noted that NIWA’s vast waterway network makes it a key driver of inland cargo movement across West Africa.
He added that NIWA’s experience on the Calabar–Cameroon route proves inland water transport can expand market access. “We are committed to leveraging our infrastructure and expertise to facilitate regional trade,” Girei said.
