NSC Claps Down on Tariff Hike, Orders Immediate Reversal
The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), acting in its role as economic regulator of the port and shipping sector, has directed all shipping lines and their agencies to immediately suspend implementation of the recently approved tariffs.
This decision follows concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the timing, structure, and potential impact of the tariff changes on port users and the wider logistics chain.
To ensure fairness, transparency, and stability in the sector, NSC management directed all operators ti revert to the previous tariff regime that was in effect before the increase. It warned that any deviation will be treated as a breach of regulatory compliance and will attract sanctions under existing laws. It added that the suspension will remain in place until the NSC concludes its consultations and regulatory review.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to effective economic regulation, protection of cargo interests, and the promotion of an efficient and equitable maritime transport system. Operators are urged to ensure strict and immediate compliance.
