The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has been honored with the Maritime Agency of the Year 2025 award for its outstanding efforts in reducing boat mishaps by an impressive 70%.

The award, presented during the New Telegraph Newspaper Award/Dinner Night 2025 at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, was received by Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, Acting Managing Director/CEO of NIWA. He dedicated the recognition to the hardworking staff of the Authority and to former Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji, FCIB, whose leadership laid the foundation for many of NIWA’s achievements.
In his remarks to the media, Alhaji Girei expressed gratitude, noting that the award is a testament to NIWA’s unwavering commitment to maritime safety in Nigeria. He emphasized that the recognition will further inspire the Authority’s staff to intensify efforts in safeguarding lives and property on the nation’s waterways.
This award underscores NIWA’s significant contributions to promoting safety and security across Nigeria’s inland waterways. Key initiatives in 2025 included:
- Implementation of the Inland Waterways Transportation Code to standardize operations.
