The Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, has visited two ceramic manufacturing companies in Kogi State as part of efforts to enhance ease of doing business and support industrial growth in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The visit was aimed at exploring ways NIWA can support the ceramic industry in the state by leveraging Kogi’s natural resources and promoting the use of inland waterways for the transportation of raw materials and finished products.
Alhaji Girei first visited BNL Ceramic, where he was received by Mr Zhang Xin, representing the Managing Director of the company. Mr Xin expressed the firm’s readiness to partner with NIWA to optimise logistics through inland waterways.
Addressing the company’s management, the Acting Managing Director said the visit was to better understand their operations, challenges, and possible areas of collaboration, particularly in the utilisation of inland waterways for cost-effective transportation.
The NIWA boss also visited the West African Ceramic Company, where he was received by Mr Emmanuel Oreye, representing the Managing Director. Girei stated that NIWA was seeking strategic partnerships with manufacturers, adding that the authority is working to ensure waterways remain navigable all year round.
Responding, Oreye commended NIWA for the visit and said the company requires the authority’s support to transport finished goods through inland waterways. He noted that the firm already uses waterways for transporting raw materials, significantly reducing production costs compared to road transportation.
Some top NIWA officials who accompanied the Acting Managing Director on the visit include Muazu Dan’Azumi, General Manager (RPS); Engr Dakio Horsfall, General Manager (Marine); Barrister Naziru Biyankare, General Manager (Legal); Engr Fidelis Ejike, General Manager (Engineering); Engr Muhammed Dangana, General Manager (Special Duties); Mr Abubakar Danladi, Head of Finance; and DCP Shuaibu Audu, Commander, Inland Waterways Police Command.
