President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, for what he described as impactful reforms that have strengthened the Service’s institutional capacity and elevated Nigeria’s profile within the global Customs community.
The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday, 18 January 2026, and signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, to mark Adeniyi’s birthday.
According to the statement, President Tinubu said the milestone reflects decades of dedicated service and reform-driven leadership that has repositioned the Nigeria Customs Service as a more efficient and globally competitive institution.
“The President notes the remarkable reforms that have repositioned the Nigeria Customs Service and elevated Nigeria’s standing within the global Customs community,” the statement said.
The President highlighted Adeniyi’s election as Chairman of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council in June 2025 as a significant validation of Nigeria’s growing influence in international Customs administration, describing it as a reflection of sustained institutional reforms within the NCS.
Tinubu further praised the Comptroller-General for projecting Nigeria and Africa on the global stage through what he termed inclusive, practical and charismatic leadership at the WCO, particularly in mobilising Customs administrations and key stakeholders toward the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) via the Customs Partnership of African Cooperation in Trade (C-PACT) platform.
The statement noted that internal reforms introduced under Adeniyi’s Leadership, especially in automation, digitisation, capacity building and high-level international engagement have yielded measurable gains in trade facilitation, revenue generation and border security.
According to the President, “the ongoing transformation within the Service reflects purposeful leadership and a deliberate drive to position Nigeria Customs as a model institution in Africa and beyond.”
Tinubu also acknowledged improvements in community relations, the consistent surpassing of revenue targets, stronger trade partnerships with foreign countries and multilateral institutions, as well as enhanced border security, stressing that “these achievements underscore the value of reform-oriented leadership in strengthening national economic resilience and safeguarding our borders.”
The President prayed that “the Almighty God grants him continued strength, good health and wisdom to further serve the nation.”
