LASWA Issues Fresh Warning on Night Waterway Travel Ahead of Ilashe Concert

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has re-emphasised the ban on night-time travel across Lagos inland waterways, warning residents and visitors to comply strictly with daylight-only operations to avoid accidents and legal sanctions.

The reminder was issued on Sunday, January 11, 2026, as part of heightened safety measures ahead of the much-anticipated Ilashe Beach concert by renowned Fuji musician, Alhaji Sule Alao Malaika, which is expected to draw large crowds to the waterfront destination.

In a statement, LASWA stressed that “all boat operations, whether commercial or private, are restricted to daylight hours to ensure everyone’s safety,” noting that night voyages remain prohibited due to “significant risks like poor visibility and navigational dangers.” The authority explained that the restriction is aimed at safeguarding lives and property on the waterways.

The agency urged fun seekers and concertgoers to plan their trips ahead of time, arrive early, and avoid any attempt to travel by water after sunset. It also reminded boat operators of their responsibility to comply with authorised operating hours, adhere to safety protocols, and ensure that all passengers wear life jackets at all times.

LASWA further disclosed that it would not tolerate violations of the directive, warning that offenders will face legal consequences.

According to the statement, LASWA, in collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and other safety and security agencies, will actively patrol the waterways to enforce compliance.

Reaffirming its mandate, the authority stated that its commitment remains to provide “secure, efficient, and well-regulated water transport for all Lagos residents and visitors,” while calling on the public to cooperate with safety regulations.

The statement reminded waterway users that “safety on our waterways is everyone’s responsibility,” urging collective vigilance to prevent avoidable incidents during the festive outing.
