The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have launched an investigation into a late-night boat mishap involving a Savvy Marine passenger boat, which left six passengers dead and four others rescued along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos.

Confirming the mishap involving a Savvy Marine passenger boat at about 8:35 p.m. on December 30, 2025, along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel, the authorities said the boat was en route from Ilashe Beach House when the incident occurred.

According to LASWA and NIWA, emergency response was swift after a distress alert was received, with Search and Rescue (SAR) teams immediately activated and deployed in collaboration with the Marine Police and other first responders.

“As of the time of this report, four (4) passengers have been successfully rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” the authorities confirmed. “Sadly, six (6) other passengers were recovered dead at the scene.”

They added that search and rescue operations are still ongoing to account for all persons involved in the mishap.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the boat may have collided with a submerged object, although the authorities stressed that inquiries are still underway to fully ascertain the cause of the accident.

“LASWA and NIWA wishes to assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available,” the statement said.

The agencies extended their condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, reiterating their commitment to safety on Lagos inland waterways.

“LASWA and NIWA extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and assures the public of its continued commitment to ensuring safety on Lagos Inland Waterways,” the statement read.

The authorities also emphasized the need for strict adherence to safety regulations, including proper navigation practices and compliance with the no night travel rule, as they urged boat operators and passengers to prioritize safety at all times.

Members of the public were advised to remain calm and rely only on verified information from LASWA, NIWA, and other official sources as rescue efforts and investigations continue.
