COWA Embarks on Sustainable Empowerment Drive Under Kikelomo Adeniyi’s Leadership

The National President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Kikelomo Adeniyi, has unveiled a new strategic vision for the association, aimed at positioning COWA on the global stage through strategic partnerships, particularly with Brazil, and the establishment of a research and training centre for members.

Speaking at the COWA empowerment programme organised by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ at the Customs Training College, Ikeja, on Sunday, Adeniyi emphasized that the new direction aligns with the global leadership role of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, who currently serves as Chairman of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council.
She explained that the new direction focuses on creating lasting opportunities for members through international collaborations and sustainable skill-building initiatives. “COWA needs to transcend local boundaries and forge international partnerships, particularly with Brazil, to explore investment opportunities and establish a research training centre,” she stated.

According to her, this strategic move will enable the association to build a resilient and sustainable future for its members, while also contributing to national economic growth.

Adeniyi noted that COWA’s empowerment agenda is now shifting from the traditional distribution of sewing and catering equipment to more holistic and sustainable approaches.
“We are aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu,” she said, adding that the association is exploring green initiatives, recycling opportunities, and other vocational training programmes designed to support small-scale businesses.

The COWA President emphasized the critical role of women in nation-building. “When a woman is empowered, the nation is also empowered,” she remarked. She encouraged customs officers’ wives to remain supportive of their husbands, take charge of their well-being, and undergo regular medical check-ups.
In his remarks, the Controller of FOU Zone ‘A’, Comptroller Muhammed Shuaibu, commended the initiative, urging COWA members to make the most of the resources provided.

He described the empowerment programme as a vital effort to “address the economic and social challenges faced by officers’ wives,” noting that the strength of the Nigeria Customs Service lies not only in its officers but also in the stability and wellbeing of their families.

He assured that the Unit would continue to strengthen the COWA programme, expand its reach, and provide consistent support to families of customs officers.
COWA supported its trained members, widows, and retirees by providing sewing machines, washing machines, catering equipment, and cash grants, demonstrating the association’s unwavering dedication to enhancing members’ welfare and boosting their productivity.

Adeniyi expressed her appreciation to the donors and sponsors, reaffirming COWA’s commitment to women’s empowerment and national development.
Recipients lauded Adeniyi for her exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing the welfare of all COWA members nationwide.
