MWUN Calls on NIMASA to Issue Biometric IDs for Dockworkers and Seafarers

MWUN Calls on NIMASA to Issue Biometric IDs for Dockworkers and Seafarers

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has called on the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to issue biometric identification cards for its Dockworkers and Seafarers branches. The aim is to clearly distinguish legitimate workers from impostors operating within Nigeria’s seaports.

During a courtesy visit to NIMASA’s Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, MWUN President-General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, accompanied by his national executive team, emphasized the urgent need for biometric registration. He explained that proper identification would help eliminate unauthorized individuals posing as dockworkers and seafarers, which undermines the union’s credibility and threatens port security.

Comrade Bunu stressed that biometric cards would not only enhance documentation but also improve safety and reduce theft and pilfering of goods at the ports—issues that have long plagued importers and exporters. He noted that this initiative would foster a more secure and business-friendly environment across Nigeria’s maritime sector.

In addition to the biometric proposal, MWUN reaffirmed its commitment to a long-standing collaboration with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to establish a Seafarers Recreation Center in Apapa. The center would offer sailors a place to relax and recharge after long voyages, contributing to their well-being and serving as a potential revenue source for the union.

Responding to the union’s requests, Dr. Mobereola assured MWUN of NIMASA’s continued support. He pledged to honour previous agreements related to the recreation center and expressed optimism about strengthening the partnership between both organizations.

He also congratulated Comrade Bunu on his recent election victory, expressing confidence in the union’s leadership and its role in advancing Nigeria’s maritime workforce.
