NSML Clinches Maritime Excellence Award, Reaffirms Dedication to Capacity Development

NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML) has restated its firm commitment to maritime training and human capacity development, describing them as essential for adapting to the fast-evolving global maritime regulatory landscape.

This reaffirmation came during the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) Conference, held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

Representing the Managing Director of NSML, Mr. Abdulkadir Ahmed, Mr. Mutiu Olayiwole, Manager, Finance & Corporate Services, presented a paper titled “The Evolving Global Maritime Regulatory Environment – The Role of Maritime Training and Capacity Development.”

In his presentation, Mr. Ahmed highlighted the increasing pace of change in global maritime regulations, largely driven by environmental concerns, digital innovation, and human capital challenges.

He noted that the maritime industry being the backbone of global trade is facing new demands shaped by the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) decarbonisation goals and a heightened focus on cybersecurity.

He emphasised the need for a skilled and adaptable workforce that can meet these evolving demands.

"Compliance, safety, and operational efficiency hinge on our ability to train and empower seafarers and maritime professionals to meet the moment,” he stated.

Ahmed stressed the urgency of closing the knowledge and skills gap created by technological and regulatory shifts. He called for continuous curriculum upgrades that cover environmental compliance, digital operations, cybersecurity, and the practical implementation of international conventions.

He also spoke extensively on NSML’s investments in human capital development, particularly through its Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE) in Bonny, Rivers State.

The centre is the first maritime training facility in Africa to be accredited by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK MCA). It is also certified by DNV and approved by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to offer STCW 2010-compliant courses.

“NSML is proud to champion Nigeria’s maritime development, not just through vessels and infrastructure, but by investing in the people who power the industry,” Ahmed affirmed.

He also commended AMJON for its contributions to maritime journalism and national discourse, and reiterated NSML’s unwavering dedication to building a resilient, secure, and sustainable maritime sector in Nigeria and across the continent.

The event’s high point was the presentation of the Maritime Excellence Service Award to NSML by AMJON. The award recognised NSML’s exceptional contributions to sustainable shipping and its role in transforming Nigeria’s maritime sector through world-class training programmes, operational innovation, and strategic investment in maritime infrastructure.

NSML’s Structured Cadetship Development Programme (SCDP) was also highlighted as a key milestone in local content development. The company has trained over 200 cadets through the programme, many of whom now play active roles in its operations. This has resulted in an 85% Nigerianisation of crew aboard NSML-managed vessels and a 100% Nigerian workforce in onshore positions.

In addition, NSML operates one of Africa’s most advanced maritime simulation suites. The facility offers real-time, immersive training across bridge, engine room, and cargo operations, as well as emergency response scenarios—ensuring trainees are fully prepared for global maritime challenges.

Beyond training, NSML continues to drive transformation in the Nigerian maritime sector. The company is currently overseeing the construction of a 23,000m³ LPG carrier in South Korea and is progressing with a fleet renewal strategy, which includes replacing older steam vessels with newer, dual-fuel LNG carriers such as AXIOS II and AKTORAS.
