LASWA Intensifies Water Transport Safety Ahead of Rainy Season with Life Jacket Distribution

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has rolled out its 2025 Waterways Safety Sensitisation Campaign, distributing life jackets across major jetties and riverine communities in a renewed push to promote safety and build public trust in water transportation.

A statement issued by LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit described the initiative as part of the agency’s ongoing commitment to fostering a safety-first culture and minimising incidents of boat mishaps on Lagos inland waterways.

The campaign spans key operational jetties and terminals such as Falomo, Ijede, Sangotedo, Badore, Ito-Omu, Tarzan, and Baiyeku, where LASWA officers conducted safety demonstrations, engaged with passengers and boat operators, and handed out certified life jackets free of charge.
The sensitisation sessions focused on proper life jacket use, emergency response procedures, and LASWA’s mandatory safety protocols for boarding and operating ferries. Officers also emphasized the agency’s standing policy of “No Life Jacket, No Boarding.”

To further reinforce the safety message, LASWA distributed a range of materials including branded life jackets, safety souvenirs, informational leaflets, pens, and notebooks — a move designed to promote compliance and embed a stronger safety culture among waterway users.
This year’s exercise is especially critical as it comes during the peak of the rainy season, a time when waterway hazards increase due to high tides, wind surges, and poor visibility. LASWA’s proactive approach is aimed at addressing these risks through public awareness and improved access to safety gear.

Local stakeholders and passengers praised LASWA’s efforts, noting its expanding presence in underserved riverine areas and consistency in safety advocacy.
