Canada Returnee Arrested for Assaulting Lagos Sanitation Officer
A 52-year-old Canada returnee, Morufudeen Idowu, has been arrested in Lagos for allegedly assaulting an official of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) who attempted to stop him from crossing the expressway illegally.

The incident occurred during a routine enforcement operation around the busy Ojota corridor, where LAGESC personnel, also known as KAI officers, were stationed to deter unsafe pedestrian practices.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, Idowu refused to comply with lawful instructions and proceeded to physically attack the officer.

“Mr Morufudeen Idowu – 52yrs, a Canada returnee, refused arrest and assaulted one of our personnel while crossing the expressway at Ojota,” Wahab announced in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday.

He added that the suspect was apprehended and is currently in custody at the LAGESC office in Oshodi, where he will be prosecuted in line with Lagos State laws.

While full details of the altercation have yet to be released, officials say enforcement in areas like Ojota is critical due to the high number of fatal accidents caused by illegal expressway crossings. Pedestrians are required by law to use overhead bridges, with violators subject to fines or arrest.

LAGESC plays a vital role in maintaining environmental and public safety standards in Lagos, including curbing street trading, improper waste disposal, and pedestrian infractions.
