The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, has reacted to a false and disturbing allegation making the rounds claiming that the Command seized and later released bags of rice without the owner's consent, allegedly leading to several deaths, including that of a soldier in Badagry.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, CSC Isah Sulaiman, made it clear that the claims are baseless and completely misleading.

He stressed that the NCS operates strictly by the book, following its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) when handling or disposing of seized goods. This includes full transparency, adherence to due process, and compliance with all legal requirements.

Sulaiman also confirmed that there have been no reports of any deaths or health issues linked to rice consumption either within the Command’s jurisdiction or among its officers.

“The spread of such misinformation appears to be driven by individuals misusing journalistic platforms to disseminate falsehoods, undermining public trust in security agencies.

“The public is urged to disregard these unfounded stories and avoid sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary fear or damage the reputation of agencies dedicated to national security.

“Under the leadership of Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, PhD, the Seme Area Command remains committed to its core responsibilities of revenue generation, combating smuggling, and facilitating legitimate trade in line with government policies and legal frameworks,”the statement added.
